Reduce your risk of a stroke thanks to knowledge of your DNA

If a member of your family suffers a stroke, you are naturally concerned, in the first instance, about the person affected. Later, however, other concerns will often also start to play on your mind. Is it hereditary? Will I get it too? Can I do anything to reduce the risk?

At iGene we deal with heredity and prevention on a daily basis and help you find answers to these kinds of questions.

Stroke – also known as a cerebrovascular accident – is a collective term covering cerebral infarctions and cerebral haemorrhages. During a stroke the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. A temporary blockage of a blood vessel is referred to as a TIA. A cerebral haemorrhage results from a rupture in a blood vessel, which is generally caused by a weak spot in the blood vessel in question (aneurysm). The risk of suffering a stroke increases with age.

Genetic predisposition to a stroke

Your personal risk of a stroke depends on various factors. One of these is your DNA, but environmental factors and lifestyle also play a role, for example. To make a statement about your genetic predisposition, we examine mutations (changes or errors) in your DNA.

Preventing a stroke

Scientists are finding out more and more about ways to reduce the risk of a stroke. That means you can take steps yourself to prevent a stroke. iGene can help by sharing relevant scientific information with you directly in your iGene Passport.
